This is the first time in five years that I have been home on Labor Day. Usually, my son and I are on one of our sports trips. Year 1 was Detroit. Year 2 was Los Angeles. Year 3 was San Francisco. Year 4 was Boston. Year 5 hinted at Seattle, until this summer happened. Though she told us to go, my wife is smack in the middle of radiation treatment on her breast, so the trip was postponed and redesigned. The entire abk journey is about redesign and adjustment, so it was no big deal.

Instead of the Seattle Sounders, the Apple Cup, the Seattle Mariners, and the Seattle Seahawks, I’m going home. Let me rephrase that, we are all going home. It’s been a minute since I have been to North Carolina, and it has been calling heavily. So in three weeks, a beautiful intersection will occur. First and foremost, I get to see my family. Second, I get to choose between Miami vs Clemson or Notre Dame vs North Carolina. Third, my Carolina Panthers host Sunday night football. Last, the Charlotte Hornets kick off a new season.
Coincidentally, it’s Fall Break for the kids, so the entire family plus my North Carolina family get to participate in as much or as little as they would like. It’s a family trip AND a sports trip. Pretty cool.

I spent the better part of 35 years in North Carolina. I have never been to Seattle. Otherwise, this new look sports/family trip ticks all of the boxes. I’m buzzing. I’ve spent the better part of the last year doing PGA work and working on my body, which was important, necessary, but not a ton of fun.
It’s time to hit the road. After North Carolina and whatever awesomeness that may bring, we turn right around and spend Halloween in OUR SPOT in the mountains. Then, another, redesigned sports trip has presented itself: Saturday night Nuggets at Pelicans, Sunday Panthers at Saints, Monday Warriors at Pelicans.
There’s a new Amtrak route that runs right in front of the golf course and spits you out in the heart of New Orleans. We may give it a try.
Different. Redesigned. Adjusted. Not the same, but equally as good.
